New Classroom - Day 1 as a volunteer

The first day saw Team 1 of volunteers from Tonbridge Grammar, start work on the Manyenje Classroom build. The first team have the task of working alongside local skilled fundis (builders) to get the foundations of the classroom started for Team 2 and Team 3 to build on.

The first day has been very productive and the new classroom site is already beginning to take shape.
Amy T and Kitty, having been the first on site to meet the contractor, gave the morning briefing and rallied the troops for a morning split between brick-making with members of the community and site-clearing for the foundations to be dug.
After a few mandazis (African doughnuts) and a cup of tea for morning break, the team were back out on the build site, with some other 'home improvement' side projects including the creation of a hand-washing station and a seed garden.
The afternoon saw an impromptu football match and many games with the Manyenje children before a sumptuous curry and sticky rice prepared ably by Issy and Becca S with guidance from Dorcus - the Malawian cook from the local community.
Stars of the day: Harriet and Tamsin for their effort and enthusiasm on site. This team is being led by Inspire Worldwide. To find out more about their bespoke volunteering trips please visit www.inspire-worldwide.com
